Grilled Cheese Sandwich Guide

I know what you are thinking! Bobbie, Bobbie, Bobbie you are really late on the grilled cheese post. Didn’t everyone do that last week? I know, but instead of just throwing some pretty pictures up and some links I wanted to delve into the world known as “Grilled Cheese Samwiches.” I had questions that needed answers and I knew it would take some time to find those answers and then bring them to you. Don’t worry though, I still included some pretty pictures and links. But, I also included some information about grilled cheese sammies and what makes them so special!

Question 1: Where did Grilled Cheese Sandwiches originate?

Inexpensive bread and a substance known as processed cheese became available in 1920. The Food Timeline states that World War II issued cookbooks talked about Navy Cooks making hundreds of broiled “American Cheese Sandwiches.” Since bread and cheese were considered inexpensive at the time, it made only sense that would be a staple to our military. For a couple decades Grilled Cheese Sandwiches were served open face and often with pre-packaged shredded cheddar cheese. Around 1960 the top piece appeared and was said to make the sandwich more filling. In the 50’s Tomato soup was added and was starting to be served in school cafeterias across the nation. The sandwich was often broiled and no one really knows when it became grilled. The sandwich is so popular that Kraft used it to revive their “singles” cheese in 2007.  Regardless of how it “originated” the Grilled Cheese Sandwich is a staple in the US and has so many variations that it is sure to please even the most finicky eater.

Question 2 : What is the best Pan to use to grill or broil your Grilled Cheese Sandwich?

When I started searching for Pans there were thousands of pans online. So now you know why this post took so long. I set out to find what I thought would be perfect to make those extra special sammies. Grilled cheeses today are not your Mom’s grilled cheese. They are no longer 1 slice of cheese between 2 slices of bread. They are perfected creations that include ingredients such as bacon, avacado, apples, pears, turkey, and ham. Some of these sandwiches are monsters in their own right and you need a pan that is going to allow you manuever that monster so you can bring it to the table in one piece. You need one that cooks evenly, heats well, and non-stick. It needed to be a little on the heavy side but not so heavy you broke your wrist trying to get it on the stove. However, the best pan ( listed last) is the heaviest but by far the best, in my opinion.

Pan #1- Ecolution Heavyweight 7-Inch Grilled Cheese Pan, Black


This pan is non-stick, 7 inches, and is pure aliminum which means it will heat evenly. I found it on Amazon for $17.75. Sears also has the pan and it is double the price. Wowser!

Pan #2:  Lodge Logic L8SGP3 Pre-Seasoned Square Grill Pan, 10.5-inch


After much debate I must say after reading countless reviews I decided to buy this pan for my grilled cheese sandwiches. That is usually how it works! I am hunting stuff for you guys and I end up broke. The one above is great if you are just looking for a pan to make sandwiches. This one is for the grilled cheese guru. First of all it is cast iron. That right there makes me swoon. So many people look over cast iron because it is heavy, you have to season it, and again, it’s heavy. But they don’t know what they are missing out on.Seasoning it is not that hard! I swear if I can do it, so can you. Yes it is heavy but it lasts forever. I know this because my Mom has cast iron skillets passed down from her Great-Grandmother. Not only that but everything tastes better in a cast iron pan. It is also versatile. You can take it from the stove to the oven! Trust me, you haven’t had corn bread until you have had it from a cast iron skillet! It is easy to clean and got 239 5 star reviews on Amazon. I know, I know I sound like an infomercial but it only becuse I am in love with this pan. Not only for grilled cheeses but for any type of meat or sandwich you want to grill. AMAZING!

Question # 3- What can I do to make my Grilled Cheese Sandwich come out perfect?

That is almost like asking the question “How do I make sure I never have another bad hair day as long as I live?” Everyone has an answer and what works for some may not work for another. Also, let’s face it, your grilled cheeses aren’t going to be perfect every time. The same way you are never going to go through life without having a couple bad hair days! I did learn a few things though, so I will share them with you!

  1. I didn’t know this and I was a little ashamed of it. To get perfect melty cheese bring your cheese to room temperature. If it is cold it takes longer to heat and your sandwich may be done before your cheese is. This is especially important if you are using a harder cheese like my favorite- Horseradish Cheddar.
  2. It’s all about the bread baby! All about the bread. Use good quality bread that is crusty on the outside and soft on the inside.
  3. Use soft butter that is easy to spread. Nothing spells grilled cheese disaster like torn up bread!
  4. You are grilling cheese not setting it on fire. There is no reason to have your pan so hot that it scorches your bread. Keep it a medium low heat so it has time to heat thoroughly and really melt that cheese. Giving you an amazing crust and oooey gooey cheesy flavor.
  5. Please, please for all the love in the world don’t put a lid on your grilled cheese while it is cooking. Yes, it speeds things along but it also sweats the sandwich and ewww, just eww!
  6. Serve your masterpiece immediately. Nothing is worse than serving a grilled cheese cold. Again, ewww!
