I will be the first to admit I am not super crafty. Oh, how I try, though. I have tried jewelry making, crocheting, knitting, scrapping, well you name it, I tried it. But I have just never been really good at anything. I had an eye for color and design but for some reason I could never pull it together. Needless to say, my girls were not the girls that had the super cute holiday craft items at school. They would bring home all of these cute little crafty items other parents had made and I would get so jealous.
When my girls were little we still had dial up, so I wasn’t into the internet much because who had time to wait on dial up when you had two kids under 5? Not this Mama, that’s for sure. After Alianna got sick I couldn’t work anymore. Through a series of events, that I won’t go into because it is a super long story, I ended up in the PSP community. The PSP community is a group of women (and a few men) that use artists art work to make tags. I started working for a huge licensing company as a copyright manager and of course I was making little tags too. That started my love affair with graphic design. For the last 12 years I have stuck with it but I gave up the PSP (paint shop pro) part and moved to Photoshop a long time ago. Pshew, I need to hurry this up, so let us skip a few years.
In 2012 I started blogging and only used my design work for my blog. Blogging was going good until June of last year. My sister passed away and my life kind of spiraled out of control. Needless to say, the last part of 2015 was bad. Income dried up and I lost a lot of blogging contracts because I just didn’t want to blog. The only thing I really blogged was Disney or the occasional tech thing that caught my fancy.
Then I was invited on a press trip to Disney and I knew I had to turn my way of thinking around. It was time to let go of the sadness and move back into the living. More stuff happened way before this but I will tell you all that another time. Anyway, if I wanted to go on this trip I knew I needed money to fix a few things and pay some bills. I had tried selling my printables before but they flopped. However, when you are desperate for money you will try anything. Basically, I had three options- 1. Strip at a fat chick club 2. Pull a Breaking Bad or 3. Put my design skills to use and try to make a little income out of it. I took option 3 and it changed my whole life.
I made my first printable and it sold. People liked my stuff and I found a happiness I hadn’t had in a long time. After a few weeks I found out that I was actually looking forward to getting up in the morning. One of my favorite bloggers, All Mommy Wants, made a comment on a Facebook post. She said “I think you found your niche.” She never knew how much those words changed everything. Because I had and so I decided to run with it. Like the wind, as fast as my short little fat legs would take me.
I will still be blogging but mostly about food, Disney, and entertainment. But I have decided to try a new direction and maybe, just maybe after 41 years I have finally found my place. I am now in the midst of saving money to open an Etsy shop to offer one-of-kind custom printables. It will be a full-service shop, so I am taking things slow. It costs a lot to start a business and my kids have joked that I should do a kickstarter or gofundme. But I am okay with taking it slow. I want to do it right. I am tired of trying to find my place in the world. If this is my niche or my place, I want to be there a long time. So if it takes me a bit to get there, it’s okay. There’s no rush because I will be staying awhile.
